Coal gasification is the process of producing syngas (a mixture consisting primarily of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapour) from coal and water, air and/or oxygen. It is internationally accepted as one of the most viable and effective clean coal technology. Syngas can further be processed to produce liquid fuel, ammonia, methanol, et cetera. Although it reduces some environmental impact from traditional coal firing, it doesn't eliminate the environmental impact from coal extraction and early processing.
